It is, however, certain that the \expndtw6 king of Valabhl, Dhruvabhata or Dhruvasena II, had \expndtw9 to bear the brunt of Harsa's aggression. The latter \expndtw-2 won some successes in the beginning and his adversary \expndtw0 had to seek the protection of Dadda II of Broach. With \expndtw-1 his help Dhruvabhata regained his power, being on the throne at the time of Yuan Chwang's visit. This conflict \expndtw2 could not have been a matter of indifference to Pula-\expndtw3 kesin II, who considered himself "lord of the whole \expndtw0 region of the south." Accordingly, a trial of strength \expndtw13 between the two great monarchs was inevitable. \expndtw1 The \i Ufe \i0 deposes that Harsa personally took the com\-\expndtw-8 mand against \i Pu-lo-ki-sha \i0 (Pulakesin II) of \i Mo-ha-la-cha \i0\expndtw0 (Maharastra),\super 3\nosupersub but nothing availed him, and he was repulsed with severe losses by his southern rival.
